SAIGON SECRETS: A TRAVEL GUIDE TO THE BEST OF HO CHI MINH CITY
WHAT TO DO, SEE AND BEST PLACES TO EAT
LINKS YOU MAY NEED:
Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon is one of the major cities in Vietnam located in the south of the country. It is a place where history and modernity collide in the most fascinating way. Walking through its bustling streets feels like stepping into a living, breathing mosaic of culture, food, and life. It is a city of contrasts where tall skyscrapers and modern coffee shops coexist with the food stalls along the road. For those who set foot in Vietnam for the first time or for first-time travelers, this city could look like a sensorial overload but give the time to discover all that this city has to offer.
In this travel guide, I’ll share my journey through the city along with practical tips to help you make the most of your visit. Here you will not find the traditional itinerary, but what I will show you is how to make the most out of your visit and experience the city not just as a tourist. First of all, it is important to know that the city is divided into districts and it will be your way to move around and references.
ARRIVAL IN HO CHI MINH CITY: FIRST IMPRESSIONS
The moment I landed at Tan Son Nhat International Airport, I was struck by the energy of this city; this will also, probably be your first and biggest cultural shock, at least it was for me. Arm yourself with a lot of patience because you'll find yourself stuck in a queue for hours, standing, in the heat, the endless line for immigration, after all my travels I have not yet encountered a more endless immigration line than this, so be mentally ready and keep this in mind in case you have a flight take or layovers.
Travel Tip: When arriving in Ho Chi Minh City I recommend buying a local SIM card. Personally, every time I go to Vietnam, I prefer to rely on the Viettel company which is the biggest and best-known in the country once you buy a SIM card, the process is quite quick. Once that is done, download the GRAB app, it's the most reliable way to get around, offering fair prices and an easy-to-use interface.
I’ll put here a map with all the locations
EXPLORING DISTRICT 1 : THE HEART OF THE CITY
District 1 is where you’ll find many of the iconic attractions; such as Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon and Saigon Central Post Office from which you can send a postcard. Stunning remnants of French colonial architecture.
But my favorite is Nguyen Street, especially at night when it lights up and people stream in the streets, personally, it reminds me a little of Kuala Lumpur and is much more touristy than the other districts but at the same time very lively and vibrant, the streets fill with people, food stalls and street artists and live performances in the square. It's the city's heart, everything is within walking distance and the main attractions are quite close to each other. In District 1, on Nguyen Street don't miss:
Book street: a street that extends for about 100 meters, lined up with books to choose from and small coffee shops where you can relax and read a book you just bought, I think it is also a great place to buy a unique souvenir.
Café Apartment: made famous mainly thanks to Tiktok, it is a story building with coffee shops, choose the one you prefer and enjoy a drink from one of its terraces while you watch life whizz by below, I recommend it, especially in the evening, the view is not bad at all.
DISCOVERING DISTRICT 3: A BLEND OF CHARM AND TRANQUILITY
District 3, often overshadowed by the buzz of District 1, offers a more laid-back and authentic experience. This is where I chose to stay, and its proximity to District 1 makes it a great base if you’re looking for a more genuine and less touristy experience. Here, the tree-lined streets are dotted with charming cafes, art deco buildings, and local markets.
Travel tip: District 3 is home to some of the best traditional Vietnamese eateries.
WHAT AND WHERE TO EAT
Ho Chi Minh City is a paradise for food lovers, and it is perhaps the city where I have found the best eateries, especially in District 3. If you want to try the best banh mi of your life, head to Banh Mi Co Linh, I have been to Vietnam twice and I have visited this county far and wide and of course had the chance to try many banh mi, even tho every city and vendor put its own unique tweak, this was perhaps the best banh mi I have ever eaten.
If you want a more refined experience and are looking for a vegetarian restaurant you absolutely must try NHA HANG CHAY HUE QUANG in District 3, it may be on the higher price but the food is absolutely divine, I didn't think that a vegetarian Pho could be so tasty.
Travel tip: Look for places packed with locals; they know where the best food is. If you’re unsure where to start, Ben Thanh Market is a great spot to sample a variety of Vietnamese dishes.
UNWINDING AT THE COFFEE SHOPS
Vietnamese coffee is something else entirely and when it comes to coffee shops Vietnam is on a whole other level. I have discovered some hidden gems and some of the most beautiful coffee shops the city has to offer such as CAFE SAN VUON MIEN THAO MOC located in District 11, which feels like you've stepped in a fairy tale
or SOO KAFE, where you will be surrounded by books in a relaxed and slightly hipster atmosphere.
THE LOCAL MARKETS: A SHOPPER’S DREAM
Shopping in Ho Chi Minh City is an adventure. You can find everything from souvenirs to spices and fresh produce.
Head to Cholon, the largest Chinatown in Vietnam, to get a glimpse of daily life, look for some souvenirs, or try the delicious cuisine that mixes Vietnamese and Chinese culture. Cholon, like any market, is a sensory overload: clothes, tools of all kinds, food, spices, and fruit, in this labyrinth, you can find anything and much more.
Travel tip: Haggling is expected in most markets, so don’t hesitate to negotiate for a fair price. Personally, this isn't something I usually do or like doing in Vietnam as the prices are already very low compared to Western ones, but to each their own.
PRACTICAL TIPS FOR VISITING HO CHI MINH CITY
Currency: The Vietnamese Dong (VND) is used here. ATMs are widely available, but always carry some cash for small purchases. Most places accept cash only, and where cards are accepted, you will be charged a 3% fee.
Language: English is spoken in tourist areas, but learning a few Vietnamese phrases can get you a long way, otherwise, Google Translate will become your best friend.
Weather: Ho Chi Minh City is hot and humid all year round. Bring light, breathable clothing and a raincoat to protect you during the rainy season.
Travel Insurance: Personally I never travel, especially if it is long trip and far destination, without travel insurance, you can find several on the internet or you can take a look here.
