BUKIT BINTANG REVEALED:

A COMPLETE GUIDE TO KL’S VIBRANT DISTRICT

a guide to the best things to see and do and where to eat in the Bukit Bintang district

If New York has Times Square, Kuala Lumpur has Bukit Bintang.

Kuala Lumpur is a modern and technological city and Bukit Bintang is the proof, is KL’s shopping and entertainment hub. It is always lively and crowded, famous for its shopping centers, shops, and places to eat. It's the place to be, may be during the day or at night when the lights blind you and the street performers take over. If there is one thing that I noticed during my 2 months, traveling across Malaysia, with Kuala Lumpur, the city in which I spent most of my time; It is that here they love malls, they are a meeting spot for locals, where to hide from the heat and especially to eat in the many food courts that you can find inside every mall. Among the best to see there are:

LOT 10:

Particularly known for its food court located at the lowest level that offers a large selection of food from Chinese cuisine. If you arrive here with Grab, you will be left at the drop-off area at the main entrance, as soon as you enter, head towards the mobile stairs and go down to the lowest level. Inside Lot 10 you can find various shops, arcade rooms, and a Japanese food court at the top level.

PAVILLION:

It is probably one of the fanciest and most luxurious shopping centers in KL, but the main reason to visit it, at least for me, it's for its big food court that houses a great variety of cuisine both traditional and foreign. If you go up to the top level, head to Tokyo Street to experience a piece of Japan in Malaysia, between Japanese shops and restaurants, that will make your mouth water. Personally, I loved the Shabu-Shabu All You Can Eat restaurant, in the price it's also included ice cream, yogurt, and unlimited fruits.

LALAPORT:

I discovered this place by chance during the first Sakura Festival that was held here in April and May of 2024. It is a huge Japanese lifestyle-themed shopping mall between shops, bars, restaurants, a rooftop garden, cinemas, performances, events, game rooms, and other attractions. It is one of the most entertaining and equipped shopping centers.

GMBB:

It is a creative community hub center in Bukit Bintang, it is a place with an artistic atmosphere, an 8-store meeting place with cafes, workshops, exhibitions, and installations. It is also an excellent place to take home some unique, artistic souvenirs and at the same time support local artists. It is a place that mutates often but there are some fixed installations.

JALAN ALOR:

Kuala Lumpur's night markets are an essential part of the city's nocturnal landscape. Like Jalan Alor, located near the crossroad of Bukit Bintang, whether it is during the weekend, or in the week, whether there is good weather or rain, this night market that stretches along a road, is always crowded with people and offers a sensory overload. But don't be frightened, this market won't be stopped even by the rain. Come after 6 pm for the full experience. It is a market with outdoor seating, with an array of food stalls to choose from, so walk a few times back and forth to have a clearer idea and take your time. Here you can try several local delicacies while immersing yourself in the lively street life. The first impact for me was very overwhelming due to the bustling atmosphere, lights, shouts, and food choices, but it is precisely this vibe that makes this night market unique.

Pro Tip: Join a guided walking tour in Kuala Lumpur and get to grips with Malaysian cuisine with the help of a local foodie.
