WHY PHU QUOC SHOULD BE YOUR NEXT TROPICAL ESCAPE
(AND HOW TO GET THERE FROM CAMBODIA)
USEFUL LINKS:
A visit to Vietnam is incomplete without a few days spent relaxing on one of its beaches on one of the many islands across. After spending a couple of weeks in Cambodia discovering ancient temples, history, traditions and experiencing the Water Festival, it was time for me to get back to Vietnam and continue my trip across it. But before that, I really needed some sun and relax, so I traveled, crossing the border from Cambodia to end up on the island of Phu Quoc.
Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s largest island, is a tropical paradise known for its pristine beaches, lush forests, and laid-back atmosphere. Located in the Gulf of Thailand, this island boasts crystal-clear waters and a mix of Vietnamese and international influences. Whether you're looking for relaxation, adventure, or cultural experiences, Phu Quoc has something to offer.
BEST THINGS TO DO IN PHU QUOC
Phu Quoc is a place to relax, enjoy its quiet atmosphere, and try the delicious and various seafood that this island has to offer at very affordable prices.
Although there are several beaches on the island I'll be honest by saying that I don't generally go crazy for beaches and I much preferred to relax at the poolside of my homestay surrounded by no one other than the surrounding jungle. But if you are a beach lover and you really do not want to miss them among the most famous are: Sao Beach, Bai Thom, and Khem Beach.
VISIT THE PHU QUOC NIGHT MARKET
The center of the island offers a lively night market known as Dinh Cau Night Market located in Duong Dong. It is a great place to try local delicacies such as local seafood, and shop for souvenirs like something made with the pearls of which this island is a major producer.
VISIT SUNSET TOWN
Take a trip to Europe without setting foot outside of Vietnam. Yes, you read that right, Sunset Town is a hidden gem inspired by European architecture, featuring colorful buildings, charming streets, and a stunning coastal view. It really feels like Italy or at least a slightly more stereotypical and quiet idea of the major Italian cities without the excessive crowds of tourists, and boasts some nicely done reproductions such as the Colosseum. It is best known for its mesmerizing sunset views, making it a perfect spot for photographers and travelers looking to capture golden hour magic. Don't miss the famous Kiss Bridge, it is two opposing bridges with their ends slightly touching giving the impression of a suspended kiss. The town also boasts lively entertainment, such as night shows, water shows, and elegant cafes overlooking the sea. Sunset Town also has its own night market and if you wait until 9:30 pm you can enjoy a fireworks display.
HOW TO GET TO PHU QUOC FROM CAMBODIA
If you're traveling from Cambodia, one of the most scenic ways to reach Phu Quoc is by boat via Kampot. It's what I did, and after about two weeks across Cambodia it is time to go back to Vietnam to continue my journey and here I will explain how to do it. The best way to reach Vietnam, particularly Phu Quoc from Cambodia is to first get to the town of Kampot, in my case, I took a sleeper bus from Siem Reap to Kampot and the journey took about 8 hours. Once you reach Kampot you can arrange a tuk-tuk to bring you to your next stop which is going to be Ha Tien border, I paid about 20 euros and it took just under an hour to reach the border. Once you get to the Ha Tien border, you will only have to continue walking and once you've cleared Cambodian immigration you will find yourself on the other side, in Vietnam. Once you exit the frontier outside you will find several taxis, take one to the ferry and once there several ferry companies operate daily routes from Ha Tien to Phu Quoc. The crossing may take on average an hour and 45 minutes and you will have finally arrived in this tropical paradise. This route offers a budget-friendly and adventurous alternative to flying while giving you the chance to explore the Mekong Delta region along the way.
WHERE TO STAY IN PHU QUOC
Phu Quoc offers a range of accommodation options to suit all budgets, from luxury beachfront resorts to cheaper options like hostels or homestays in lovely bungalows surrounded by jungle.
WHERE TO EAT
There are several places to eat and try the delicious food that this tropical island has to offer but I would highly recommend my favorite coffee shop on the whole island, Ca Phe Sua Da 67Ha Phu Quoc, they make delicious coconut coffee and great local breakfasts.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Phu Quoc is an incredible destination for travelers looking for a mix of relaxation, adventure, and cultural experiences. Whether you’re lounging on its beautiful beaches, exploring its rich marine life, or indulging in local cuisine, this Vietnamese island is sure to leave you enchanted.
